Creating shade in a south facing garden

Creating shade in a south facing garden

For a south-facing garden, the most effective shade strategies involve a mix of permanent structures for immediate relief and “living” shade for long-term cooling.

  1. Structural Solutions

Structural options provide immediate shade and can be incorporated to your patio or seating areas.

  • Awnings: Often considered the “gold standard” for south-facing patios. They attach to the house and can be manual or motorized to provide retractable shade that also helps keep indoor rooms cool.
  • Pergolas: These provide a permanent architectural frame.
  • Shade Sails: A contemporary, cost-effective choice.
  • Parasols: For maximum flexibility, a cantilever (offset) parasol allows you to position the base away from your furniture while angling the canopy to track the sun’s movement.

  1. Natural “Living” Shade

Plants and trees act as natural “air conditioners” through transpiration, cooling the air more effectively than hard materials.

  • Trees: Deciduous trees like Japanese MaplesBirch or Amelanchier are ideal because they provide thick summer shade but allow light through during winter.
  • Climbing Plants: For the fastest natural cooling, train climbers over a pergola.
  • Virginia Creeper is excellent for cooling hot walls.
  • Grape Vines or Hops grow quickly to create a leafy seasonal canopy.
  • Wisteria and Honeysuckle add fragrance and dappled shade.

  1. Cooling Strategies for Exposed Areas

South-facing gardens often suffer from “heat-trapping.” You can mitigate this by:

  • Reducing Hard Landscaping: Large patios and gravel store and radiate heat. Replace some with lawn or ground-cover plants.
  • Strategic Furniture Placement: Use lightweight furniture that can be easily moved to follow shifting shadows throughout the day.
  • Vertical Screening: Since the sun isn’t always directly overhead, use bamboo or reed screening on fences to block low-angle afternoon sun.
